We’re at a tipping point, and we know it. Thanks to modern science and the media, we know that oil has reached it’s peak, the climate is changing, our economy is crashing, the population’s exploding and our natural resources are running out. We know all these things, but for most of us, we’re not sure how it all happened and we don’t know what we can possibly do about it. In the face of all these huge problems a just, sustainable world begins to seem like an idealistic dream. We very rarely hear the other essential positive half of the story-what’s already being done worldwide to try and make it a reality. We’re missing out on the inspiration and knowledge we need to transform our fear into hope. We need to understand that it’s not super heroes who change the world, it’s people just like us. These innovators are already out there doing it; we don’t have to reinvent the wheel. We just have to know what’s out there already.
I’ve come up with my own simple plan, and I want to share it with you. One young woman, one camera, one laptop, one backpack, one website, one hefty insurance package and a one way ticket. Four continents. Seventeen countries. Thousands of pioneering sustainability initiatives, run by millions of people with two things in common; a relentless sense of optimism and a lack of adequate funding.
Come with me on a journey from the third world to the first, from Asia to the Americas, as I track down these stubborn pioneers and find out what makes them tick. Through written reporting, new media and Web2.0, I will record their valuable insights and share them with the world in a rich online collection of lived experiences. I’ll report on their projects and track their solutions. Each will give us their own unique story of struggle, hope and innovation. Pulled together, they will tell our collective story of a world in the middle of the biggest transformation since the industrial revolution.
See you on the road!..
